Duration of the Course

The duration of the course including University Examination is 3 years in the case of Degree Course and 2 years in the case of Diploma Course. There shall be an exemption of one year in the duration of PG degree course in respect of candidates who have done P.G. Diploma course of two years and awarded Diploma in the same subject.

Eligibility for Admission 

  • Academic : Applicants should have passed the MBBS Degree from any of the Universities of Kerala or of any other University recognized by any of the Universities of Kerala as equivalent thereto with eligibility for full registration in respect of all courses. Applicants who will complete Compulsory Rotating Resident Internship (C.R.R.I.) on or before 31.03.2009 are eligible to apply for the examination, but admission to the candidates will be given only after obtaining registration of T.C. Medical Council.
  • Nativity : Applicants should have satisfied any of the following conditions.   
  1. Indian Citizens of Kerala origin.
  2. Have been residing in Kerala for a period of at least 8 years.
  3. Have passed the MBBS Degree from any of the Medical Colleges in Kerala.
In the case of applicants satisfying the above clause i or clause ii, nativity certificate shall be obtained from Tahsildars / Village Officers of Kerala State. For applicants who have undergone M.B.B.S. course in the Medical Colleges of Kerala, a certificate to that effect has to be obtained from the Principal of the Medical College, where he/she has studied. The Certificate in the body of the application form itself shall be submitted. Other certificates are not acceptable and applications will be rejected in such cases.

 Rules and regulation of examination/Exam. Calender

 1. University examination shall be conducted ordinarily twice in a year.
 2. Candidate shall register for all parts of examination in their first appearance
 3. Candidates who have undergone the prescribed course of study for a period not less than 10 (Ten) months of the academic year only can appear for the examination. No candidate shall be admitted to any part of the examination unless she/he has secured a minimum of 80% or above attendance for classes as well as Practicals in each subjects.
 4. (a) A candidate who is absent for a total of more than 60 days with in a period of three months during an academic year shall not be eligible to continue the course with the same batch of students. He/she may obtain special sanction for readmission with the junior batch of students, from higher authorities. (University / DME / Govt. of Kerala)

 (b) Candidates who fail to appear for the examination in any part or parts owing to the shortage of required attendance shall make amends for the lost attendance before appearing for the  succeeding examination. If the shortage is beyond the condonable limit, the candidate should repeat with junior batch.

 (c) Condonation will be permitted only for theory 
 5.  A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the practical areas before
issuing course completion Certificate. 
6.  Minimum pass mark shall be 50% (Fifty percentage) for internal examination, boththeory and practical. If any candidate is not having the minimum class average mark (internal assessment) of 50%, he or she shall not be allowed to appear for the University examination in any subject of that particular year of study. Calculation of internal marks shall be based on the ongoing and continuous
 assessment as specified below:
  (i) Theory :
Periodic written examination distributed throughout the year. Average of minimum three examinations for each subject, and evaluation by other methods like
  (ii) Practical (Clinical) :

(a)   Continuous clinical evaluation during the clinical experience of the student asspecified by the specific institution, including nursing care study, clinical presentation, planned health teaching programme, projects etc.

(b)   Clinical / practical examination conducted in the concerned practical area.
7.  Maximum number of attempts permitted for each paper is 3 (Three), including the first attempt.
8.  A candidate has to pass in theory and practical examination separately in each of the papers. 
9.  Minimum pass marks shall be 50% (Fifty percent) in each of the theory and practical papers separately  for University examination.
10. If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper, he / she has to reappear For both the papers (Theory and practical) of that subject. 
11. No candidate shall be admitted to the subsequent higher examination unless he / she has passed the previous examination. For eg. no candidate shall be admitted to Second year BSc Nursing examination unless he / she passed first year BSc Nursing degree examination.
12. A candidate failing in more than two subjects will not be promoted to the next year. 
13. A candidate who fails in any paper or part or in the examination may appear for that paper or whole examination during the subsequent examination. 
14. The maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 8 years from the date  of admission to the course.      
15. A candidate who secure the minimum 50% marks for pass, as specified in the scheme of examination shall be declared passed the examination.Candidate who pass all parts of examination on the first occasion of appearing thereof shall be ranked in order of proficiency as determined by the total marks obtained and shall be arranged in two classes.
 

     
Second Class :
Candidates who have passed the examination with an aggregate of 50% and above.

First Class :
Those who have secured 65% marks aggregate or above.

Distinction :

Those students who have secured aggregate 75% (Seventy five percent) or above marks be awarded distinction. Candidates who pass in the First class and who obtain not less than 75% of the marks in any subject shall be deemed to have passed with distinction in that subject. Candidates who pass the examination in subsequent appearance shall be ranked only in Second class.

Rank in the Examination :

Aggregate marks of all the 4 years regular examinations shall be considered for awarding rank for the B.Sc Nursing Examination. (A Consolidated mark list consisting of marks of all 4-year examination shall be given to all students.

Candidate shall undergo a course of professional study as mentioned below in College of Nursing or in any institution maintained by or affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, for not less than four academic years from the date of admission of the student and internship for a period of one year as per State/University policy.
 
( i )  First year BSc course in Nursing.
( ii)  Second year BSc course in Nursing.
(iii) Third year BSc course in Nursing. 
(iv) Fourth year (Final) BSc course in Nursing

It aims at identifying health needs of the people, planning and providing quality care in collaboration with other health professionals and community groups.Scope of nursing practice encompasses provision of promotive, preventive,curative and rehabilitative aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings.Practice of nursing is based upon application of basic concepts and principles derived from the physical, biological and behavioural sciences, medicine and nursing.Nursing is based on values of caring, and aims to help individuals to attain independence in self care. It necessitates development of compassion and understanding of human behaviour among its practitioners to provide care with respect and dignity and protect the rights of individuals and groups.Undergraduate nursing program is broad based education within an academic framework specifically directed to the development of critical thinking skills,competencies & standards required for practice of professional nursing and midwifery as envisaged in National Health Policy 2002.The teachers have the responsibility to be role models and create learning environment that enables students to acquire inquiry driven, self directed learning and foster an attitude of life long learning.Under graduate nursing education program prepares its graduates to become exemplary citizen by adhering to code of ethics and professional conduct at all times in fulfilling personal, social and professional obligations so as to respond to national aspirations.


 

AIM

The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is to:

Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.o Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing services,and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in a clinical/public health setting/school of nursing

Objectives

On completion of the four year B.Sc Nursing program, the graduate will be able to:

1.   Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioural sciences,medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities. 
2.   Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups. 
3.  Provide nursing care based on nursing process in collaboration with individuals and groups
4.  Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality care. 
5.  Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care. 
6.   Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes. 
7.  Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct, and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries.
8.  Communicate effectively with individuals, groups and members of the health  team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationships and teamwork.
9.   Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in clinical/community health settings/School of Nursing.
10.  Participate effectively as members of the health team in health care delivery  system.
11.   Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in clinical/community health  settings.

Admission Requirements
 

1. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December

of the year of admission

2. The minimum educational requirements shall be the passing of:

Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (12 years course),

Or

Senior School certificate Examination (10+2), pre-degree Examination (10+2)

Or

An equivalent with 12 years schooling from a recognized board or university

with Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and English with minimum of 50%

aggregate marks

3. Candidate shall be medically fit.

 

Entrance /Selection test

Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance

examination held by University or competent authority.

Duration

Duration of the course shall be four years. Internship shall be one year after

completion of the course and will be implemented as per State policy.

 

Vacation/Holidays

8 weeks vacation including holidays shall be given in each year:

 

Course Duration = 4 Years

Weeks available per year = 52 weeks

Vacation/holidays = 8 weeks

Examination (including preparatory days) = 4 weeks

Available weeks = 40 weeks

Hours per week = 40 hrs.

NOTE :

1.  Nutrition and Biochemistry Question paper will consist of Section A Nutrition of 50 marks and Section B Biochemistry of 25 marks
2.  Nursing Research & Statistics- Nursing Research should be of 50 marks and Statistics of 25 marks
3.  For Introduction to Community Health, English and Computer Science Internal Examinations to be conducted and marks to be sent to the University for inclusion in the mark sheet.
4.  All practical examinations must be held in the respective clinical areas. 
5.  Maximum number of candidates for practical examination should not exceed 15 per day.
6.  One internal and One external examiner should jointly conduct practical examination for each student.
7.  An examiner should be a Lecturer or above in a College of Nursing with M.Sc(N) in concerned subject and minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in  a College of Nursing. To be an examiner for Nursing Foundations Course,faculty having M.Sc (N) with any specialty shall be considered..
8.  Calculation of internal marks shall be based on the ongoing and continuous assessment as specified below

i) Theory :-

a)   Average of periodic written examinations distributed  throughout the year (minimum 3 in a year for  each subject of University examination) 

b)   Evaluation by other methods like assignments, seminars,projects et

ii)   Practical (clinical)

a)   Continuous clinical evaluation during the clinical experience of the students.

b)   Clinical assignments as nursing care study, clinical presentation, planned health    

      teachings , projects, etc

c)   Internal practical examination.

 

Regulations

1.    University examination shall be conducted ordinarily twice in a Year.
( One   Regular and One Supplementary examination every year)
2.  Candidate shall register for all parts of examination in their first appearance. 
3.  Candidate who have undergone the prescribed course of study for a period  not less than 10 months of the academic year only can appear for the  University examination. No candidate shall be admitted to any part of examination unless he/she has secured a minimum of 80% or above attendance for Theory as well as Practical in each subject.
 4. Candidate can apply for condonation once in the whole course time if having 70% and above attendance and should be certified by the Principal that the absence is for reasonable reason.
5.   If the shortage of attendance is beyond the condonable limit the candidate should repeat with the junior batch.
6.  A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the Practical areas  before  award of degree.   
7.  A candidate, who is absent for a total of more than 60 days continuously within a period of three months during an academic year, shall not be eligible to continue the course with the same batch of students. He/she   may obtain special sanction for readmission with the junior batch of students from higher authorities (University/DME/Govt. of Kerala)
8.  A candidate has to pass in Theory and Practical examination separately in each of the paper.
9.   Minimum pass marks shall be 50% in each of the Theory and Practical for Internal examinations as well as University examinations.
10.  Candidate who fails in any paper or part in the examination may appear for that paper or part in the subsequent examination
11.  If a candidate fails in either theory or practical of a paper, he/she has to reappear for both (Theory and practical)
12.   Maximum number of attempts permitted for each paper is 3 including first attempt.
13.  A candidate failing in more than two subjects will not be promoted to the next year.
14.  No Candidate shall be admitted to the subsequent higher examination unless he/she has passed the previous examination. For eg; no candidate shall be admitted to II year B.Sc. Nursing examination unless he/she has passed the I year B.Sc Nursing degree Examination
15.  The maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 8 years
16.  Candidate who pass all parts of examination on the first occasion of appearing there of shall be ranked in order of proficiency as determined by the total marks obtained and shall be arranged in two classes.

 

Second Class: Candidates who have passed the examination with an aggregate of 50% and above. 
First Class: Those who have secured an aggregate of 65% marks or above.

Distinction: Those students who have secured an aggregate of 75 % or 

Rank in the Examination: Aggregate marks of all the 4 years regular examinations shall be considered for awarding rank for the B.Sc Nursing examination.

(A consolidated mark list consisting of marks of all 4- year examination shall be given to all students.)
